Knuckle curve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, because the knuckle curve can be thrown with the same general motion as a fastball, it is more deceptive than a normal curveball.
The most famous practitioner of this type of knuckle curve was Major League pitcher Burt Hooton, who played for the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers from the mid 1970's to mid 1980's.
This version of the knuckle curve is currently used by Major League pitcher Mike Mussina [1].

Knuckleball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The knuckle curve has a somewhat similar name because of the grip used to throw it (also with the knuckles or fingernails), but it is generally thrown harder and with spin.
Two later pitchers, Jesse Haines and Freddie Fitzsimmons, were sometimes characterized as knuckleball pitchers even by their contemporaries, but in their cases this again refers to a harder-thrown, curving pitch that would probably not be called a knuckleball today.
When originally developed, the knuckleball was used by a number of pitchers as simply one pitch in their repertoire, usually as part of changing speeds from their fastball.

The knuckle ball is thrown by gripping the ball with your knuckles or fingernails.
A knuckle ball thrown properly will move back and forth on its way to the plate which can often make a good hitter look very foolish when his swing is nowhere near the ball.
When pitchers throw a curve ball, they put a twist on it at the last moment that causes the ball to spin diagonally or from side to side - rather than a straight backspin like a fastball.

Curveball - TheBestLinks.com - Baseball, Velocity, Batter, Magnus effect, ...
The curveball is a type of pitch in baseball thrown with a grip and hand motion that induces extra rotation on the ball causing it to "break," to fly in a more exaggerated curve than would be expected.
Also, batters anticipating a curveball may try to move forward (closer to the pitcher) in the batter's box to hit the curve before it breaks.
The knuckle curve is a variant of the curveball.

The knuckle curve is a breaking pitch - it is NOT related to the knuckleball in ANY way.
As you can see, a knuckle curve is more closely related to a slider than any other pitch; although it generally will not have the velocity of the slider because of the weakened grip (due to the knuckle on the ball).

The Dynamics of a Slider and Curve Ball
The pitch that primarily curves horizontally, is the slider, and is the one that is often mistaken for a curve ball.
The dynamics are the same as explained for the slider, only the axis of rotation is different, and therefore the air resistance forces the ball down and to the side instead of just to the side as in a slider.
There is an Fz direction due to the vertical component of the spin, and a Fy direction due to the horizontal component of the spin.

The problem with the curve is that when thrown in the conventional position (See photo) the elbow is placed in a very stressful and compromising position.
As the hand turns 90 degrees with the middle and index fingers in front of the baseball, the ligaments and tendons inside the elbow are placed in a very tight and torque position.
Even if the mechanics of throwing the curve ball are correct a chance still remains high for injury to occur in the elbow complex.
