Knute Nelson (February 2, 1843 - April 28, 1923) was an American politician.
Nelson's career in politics began when he became a member of the Wisconsin assembly, serving from 1868-1869.
Nelson was reelected in 1901, 1907, 1913, and 1918, serving until his death.

Knute proved himself an apt student with lax discipline, and he later recalled he was whipped as many as three times a day.
Knute's academic interests led him to enroll in Albion Academy in Albion in Dane County, Wisconsin in the fall of 1858.
Nelson had for some time been interested in moving further west when he in 1870 was invited by Lars K. Aaker to set up a practice in Alexandria, Minnesota, in Douglas County, part of the state's "Upper Country." Nelson was attracted by the possibilities afforded by the opening frontier, especially the prospect of the railroad.

As it was, Nelson proved invincible, and not only won in that campaign, but went on to win in the future, until he had achieved national renown.
Nelson responded with an acceptance speech which pledged his loyalty and "regularity" to the party, while insisting that the Kindred crowd represented everything which was bad, corrupt and "irregular." Gilman, Graves, H. Gordon, of Minneapolis, and Albert Scheffer, of St. Paul, all made ratification meeting speeches, and the Nelson campaign was launched.
The only way the Nelson men could have been more regular was to have remained and had a fight, but as a stray bullet might have hit a newspaper man I was always willing to waive the irregularity of their departure from the hall.

He was brought to the United States at the age of six, grew up on a Wisconsin farm, and served in the Union army in the Civil War.

Senator Knute Nelson, the U.S. Senator from Minnesota and member of the 1903 investigative committee, introduced the Alaska Road Commission legislation in 1904, creating an “Alaska Fund” through license fees, 70 percent of which would go to the Secretary of War for road construction in Alaska.
