 KNUTE NELSON: An Inventory of His Papers at the Minnesota Historical Society
Knute Nelson was born in Vosse Elven, Norway on February 2, 1843.
It provided for cession to the United States by the Minnesota Ojibwe of all their Minnesota lands except for the White Earth and Red Lake reservations, allotment of a specific amount of reservation land to each Indian, and subsequent opening of the ceded and unallotted agricultural and pine lands for settlement.
This correspondence creates a good picture of Minnesota during the war and of Nelson's efforts to place the state's resources behind the national war mobilization, as well as his efforts to win over or neutralize those groups that believed the war was a mistake.

Knute had harvested wheat and been to Canby to grind it into flour.
It was there, locating on a homestead in Hendricks Township in the spring of 1881, where they remained all their life.

Vernon township, located in the southeast corner of the county, as far as can be ascertained, was getting its first settlers in the late fifties, most of them coming from Columbia, Dane, Rock and Iowa counties in Wisconsin.
The writer can very well remember back to the time when he came to Minnesota with his parents in the spring of 168, that Vernon township was quite well settled, only a few pieces of land in sections 30 and 31 being vacant, with a few in the southeast corner.

After living in South Dakota, Texas, Oklahoma, North Dakota and various parts of Minnesota, Christoffer Jensen died on September 10, 1942 in Mahnomen, Minnesota and was buried at Tordenskjold Lutheran Cemetery with his first wife Ane (d: February 10, 1875) and his second wife Kersten (d: June 13, 1941).
Many of the descendants of these Minnesota pioneers are also buried at Tordenskjold Lutheran Cemetery next to the Church that sits on the homesteads established by the Jensen brothers.

A 1916 editorial in the New York Times attacked a war-related congressional vote by Minnesota politicians: “The Minnesota delegation in Congress consists of eleven Kaiserists and one American, and a mighty fine one, Senator Knute Nelson, born in Norway.
Knute Nelson is the only man, the sole American, Minnesota has in Congress.” In 1917 only four of the ten “Norwegian” votes were cast in support of the declaration of war requested by Woodrow Wilson.

 Early Wang Settlers
When local Valdres folk gathered on the Ole Oveson farm in Wang Township Renville County, Minnesota on July 31, 1927, a number of the older folk were selected from the assemblage estimated at 700 or 800 to be photographed separate from the crowd photo.
The fact that the township and a church are named Wang is evidence that the great majority of the early settlers were from Vang, Valdres.
The first settlers in Wang township, however, were from the Oslo area (Christiania), but the masses voted to name the township Wang instead of Christiania, which had been suggested.

The Indians would feel pressure from European settlers crowding into Minnesota at the same time as their buffalo were being depleted on the plains.
This was the Knute Elvik family that settled in South Dakota first, and then came to Williams Township, and later in life moved to the neighboring town of Lakota.
On the 1900 and 1910 censuses residents were asked when they emigrated from a foreign country, and this fixes their year of emigration as 1883.

ANDREW NELSON VIRCH, who is engaged in farming and dairying in Section 31, Mayville Township, was born at Lillethum haa Vossestranden 568 Bergen Stift, Norway, July 14, 1845, the son of Borjonel Nelson (deceased), a native of the same place, who lost his life while off trading.
In that year he came to that part of the town of Beaver that is now Mayville, settling on the northwest quarter of Section 14, Township 29, Range 1 East, and homesteaded 160 acres (a soldier's right).
He also served on the Mayville town board, for thirty-five years was justice of the peace, and for twenty-five years notary public, also at different times holding minor offices.
