Administratively, Ko Samui is an Amphoe (district) of Surat Thani province.
Ko Pha Ngan has a full-moon party at the appropriate time each lunar month, and tourists in Samui often jump on a boat to the nearby island to join in the fun.

Which is not surprising due to the fact that neither Arin and I actually had any idea where Ko Tao actually was, but we figured it wouldn't be that far.
Houses are not situated on the beach, the are perched on the cliffs high on stilts.
Despite the weather, Ko Tao was beautiful, and would recommend it to anyone.

'Tao' means turtle, and the island is named for its turtle-shaped when seen from out in the waters of the gulf whereby this mountainous area rest on a ledge of coral reefs like a sunbathing turtle.
Smaller than Samui and Pha-ngan, Ko Tao, over 20 square kilometers in area, lies about 40 kilometers northwest of Ko Pha-ngan, and is also easily accessible from Chumphon, directly west on the mainland.
Other places of interest in Ko Tao include the northeast cape of Laem Thian and its small rocky cove and Ao Tanot, a beautiful cove surrounded by limestone rock formations and a sandy beach, located further south.

Ko Tao is a relatively undeveloped island - by undeveloped I mean it does not have hotels owned, operated, managed, or otherwise overseen by companies traded on the world's major stock exchanges.
It has plenty of hotels owned, operated, managed or otherwise overseen by Australians who - for some strange reason relating to the local "agriculture" - are unable to find their way down the street to the ferry terminal.
As you can tell, Ko Tao is famous for its SCUBA diving - thought it seems that more people are interested in the "reefer" than the "reef." I have managed to actually learn to dive the proper, PADI way.

Ko Tao ist eine sehr kleine Insel, 60 km nördlich von Ko Samui und etwa 40 km entfernt von Phangan, gekennzeichnet durch 2 lange, einsame Sandstrände im Westen und kleine idyllische Buchten (zum Baden geeignet!) im Osten.
Ko Tao hat, jedenfalls was Tauchen und Unterkünfte betrifft, bestechende Preise zu liefern.
Meine Empfehlung: Anreise Ko Samui, dann nach Ko Tao weiterfahren, tauchen, tauchen, tauchen,..., über Ko Samui auf das Festland, quer durch Thailand Richtung Norden nach Bangkok, Urlaub ausklingen lassen, von Bangkok wieder Heimreise....

Except a resort (that I didn't see), Ko Tao offers spartan accommodations and the electricity for the fan or the a/c and the light generally worked only since 6 pm to 6 am.
