Koan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A koan (pronounced /ko.an/) is a story, dialog, question, or statement in the history and lore of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, generally containing aspects that are inaccessible to rational understanding, yet that may be accessible to intuition.
A famous koan is, "Two hands clap and there is a sound; what is the sound of one hand?" (oral tradition, attributed to Hakuin Ekaku, 1686-1769, considered a reviver of the koan tradition in Japan).
Koans are said to reflect the enlightened or awakened state of such persons, and sometimes said to confound the habit of discursive thought or shock the mind into awareness.

Zen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Koan practice was prevalent in the Linji school, to which Yuanwu and Ta-hui (pinyin: Dahui) belonged, but it was also employed on a more limited basis by the Caodong school.
The 'answer' to the koan involves a transformation of perspective or consciousness, which may be either radical or subtle, possibly akin to the experience of metanoia in Christianity.
The Zen student's mastery of a given koan is presented to the teacher in a private interview, referred to as dokusan (独参), daisan (代参), or sanzen (参禅).

Understanding the meaning of Zen Koans
Koans are a method of training the mind in order to achieve the state of Satori.
Koans are questions or riddles designed as instruments by the Zen Master to aid the student in finding the truth behind the everyday images of reality.
The purpose of Zen Koans is to upset or dislocate the mind from these habitual ideas of reality and open the mind to the other possibilities and, eventually, to Satori or knowledge of reality.

The paradoxical nature of Koans is essential to their function: The attempt to break down conceptual thought.
Koans are constructed so that they do not succumb to conceptual analysis and thereby require a more direct response from the meditator.

Christ the Koan would return us to the personage of “the mystery of faith,” as against the all-but-comedic spectacle of “Christ the Commodity.” This Christ the Koan whom I find implicit in Sulivan is a transcendental truth, a truth beyond confines of East or West, a Christ the Question as much as Christ the Answer.
Sulivan’s diffuse Christology is rendered “Christ the Koan” because his God is not the god of the philosophers or idols of the marketplace but the God of the mystics, and the mystics are masters, if not originators, of archetypal paradox.
Christ the Koan is Son of God and Son of Man, divine yet human, first and last, the root and offspring of David, the primal embodiment of the Paschal mystery of life-through-death.

The best-known koan is, of course, “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” I also like “What did you look like before your mother and father were born?” Both of these are verbal tricks.
Finally, the koan points to an even deeper analogy that is, IMO, fully intended by the Zen master: just as the koan is a logically structured question that, in fact, needs to be answered experientially, so too all metaphysical questions can only be answered in this manner.
Thus, the koan is not assigned to a student until after the Zen master has determined what the spiritual/existential/metaphysical problem is that the particular student has.
