Kobe is the capital of Hyogo Prefecture and is one of Japan's major ports along with the ports of Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Hakata, and Tokyo.
It is famous for its Kobe beef, the Arima Onsen (hot springs), nightview of the city both from the coast and the mountain, and the exotic atmosphere which mainly came from its history as a port city.
Kobe was briefly the capital of Japan in 1180 A.D. at the end of the Heian period.

The program is administered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for a consortium of American universities that includes the University of Arizona, the University of Hawaii-Manoa, and the University of Pittsburgh.
The program is housed in the Konan International Exchange Center (KIEC) of Konan University, a small liberal arts university of 10,000 students in a suburban district of Kobe.
Kobe is located in the Kansai area, the middle part of Japan which includes Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka.

Kobe is located on a narrow strip of land between Osaka Bay to the southeast and the Rokko mountains to the northwest.
The elevated Hanshin Expressway, which is the main vehicular traffic artery through Kobe, was closed by collapses at three locations, one of which included a 630-m section of the expressway (Figure 3).
Currently available evidence does not suggest any difference between the source characteristics of the Kobe earthquake and those of crustal earthquakes that occur in California, and our preliminary evaluation of the ground motions from the Kobe earthquake indicate that they were comparable to those we would expect from a California earthquake of the same magnitude.

This small study was a collaborative effort between the Japan Railway-West (JR), Kobe University, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to evaluate the characteristics of ground failure sites along the JR right-of-way in the Wadamisaki District of Kobe.
In the Wadamisaki District, the native beach soil deposit which suffered liquefaction damage during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake is part of the distal end of a suite of narrow distributary alluvial fans that emanate from the south slope of the Rokko Mountains.
Historically, liquefaction events of high CSR are concentrated in Japan and Taiwan, especially in the Tohoku region; the island of Hokkaido; Fukui City; Kobe City; and the Central Taiwan cities of Wufeng and Nantou, proximal to the Chi Chi fault.

 The January 17, 1995 Hyogo Ken Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake
Based on the distribution of aftershocks (Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University; Figure 2) and teleseismic waveform modeling (Kikuchi, 1995; Figure 3), the rupture length of the 1995 earthquake is inferred to have been in the range of 30 to 50 km, produced by bilateral rupture from the hypocenter.
In summary, the 1995 Kobe earthquake occurred on a mapped system of active faults, and had a mechanism that is compatible with the tectonics of western Japan as inferred from similar earthquakes that occurred during the past century.

Citibank has an office in Sannomiya (Kobes city center) where you should be able to make cash withdrawals (yen, of course) from your American account.
There are also a smattering of international ATM's around downtown Kobe and most major cities in Japan, but they can be hard to find.  There is one in the Central Miyazaki station.

For example, at the University of Pittsburgh, development for the demonstration project would be located at the IISIS Lab in the Center for Social and Urban Research, with participating faculty and students from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, School of Information Science, and Department of Computer Science.
Each university would also be encouraged to invite practicing managers from their respective communities to review the selection of data and sequence of information search and exchange processes that would be involved in an actual event.

Kobe University Research Center for Urban Safety and Security has been developing a geographic information system (GIS), called JIBANKUN, which stores the geotechnical information over all the areas of Kobe City, Japan.
So far, the locations and the capabilities of all the hospitals or clinics in Kobe City are stored in the GIS.
Coupled with the data of human casualties in the Kobe earthquake, the geotechnical risk analysis of hospitals indicates a future potential to exploit a new direction of disaster epidemiology.
