Suspension of Disbelief: JSA #45: The Trial of Kobra   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
A news reporter tells us three of the charges Kobra is facing: “first degree murder, conspiracy to commit an international act of terrorism, use of a weapon of mass destruction.” Hopefully those aren’t the only three, but at least the first and third are legitimate federal crimes.
Kobra’s comments on the stand are overtly threatening to Americans ("I reject your nation's sovereignty....A great darkness will spread its wings over creation."), and the jurors appear genuinely troubled, not charmed.
Kobra eventually speaks, saying “Now that I have the world’s attention, allow me to explain,” and proceeding to say that if he isn’t set free, five hundred of his followers outside the courthouse will be killed immediately.

Dave's Long Box: Kobra Week! WONDER WOMAN #278 DC Comics, 1981
Kobra has a thing for setting up bases in really obvious places - in previous issues he had an entire secret base hidden inside Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico that miraculously went undetected as well.
Anyway, Wonder Woman figures out that Kobra and his minions have this vast complex inside the great pyramids - I don't know, maybe they lifted the top off one of the pyramids and lowered all their gear and ICBMS into it one dark night when nobody was looking.
Kobra's dialogue is funnier if you read it out loud using the voice of Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog.

Dave's Long Box: BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS #27 DC Comics, 1985
Kobra was a cross between Dr. Doom, Hugo Drax, and Jim Jones who hissed and ssstretched out the letter "S" a lot.
My favorite Kobra appearances are 1989's The Janus Directive crossover (which I will review at some point in the future), a kick-ass Suicide Squad storyline where Kobra tries to incite a full-scale war in the Middle East by manipulating Israeli jets into destroying the Dome of the Rock, and this Batman and The Outsiders storyline.
Of course, Kobra can barely stand after the fight and has to be helped to an escape pod, and his plot has been foiled, but the fact remains: Kobra beat up Batman.

Kobra brainwashed Debbie and provided her with an updated version of the Cheetah costume.
Upon the death of her aunt, she was kidnapped by Earth-1 villain Kobra, who used a combination of brainwashing and torture to turn Domaine into the insane defender of the environment- the Cheetah.
The new Cheetah was armed with better weaponry than her predecessor, and battled Wonder Woman at Kobra's behest, only to be defeated.

Documenting comics history is a crusade that Roy Thomas has taken on as a labor of love and comics fans like me are lucky to have someone compiling info like this in an entertaining to read format.
The only paid comics magazine sub I currently carry is the always excellent Alter Ego (and shame on you if you have any appreciation for comics history and are not reading this).
It wasn’t a compelling narrative device and if there was a person who read this comic who didn’t see it would resolve with Sapphire suddenly remembering, he or she ought to be shunned by decent comics reading folk.

Of course BA being a former villain is the only one who would carry this through, as Kobra should have known.

 Suspension of Disbelief: July 2005
Yet I can’t help but feel, the more and more genetics are introduced in comics as crucial part of the stories we read, that the writers don’t know a thing about genetics.
It seems to me however the majority of the comic industry is currently holding ‘nature’ is stronger than ‘nurture’.
Frequently, comic creators will utilize the image of a text piece, such as a newspaper or magazine, but will only script a headline and use Lorem ipsum for the article.

Publisher: DC On the cover to Breach Kobra's men hover in the background, but writer Bob Harras has twisted Kobra into some sort of trite terrorist organization rather than celebrate the preposterousnessssssssssss of the ssssscaled zaniesssss.
Kobra can blow up chunks of the country, and I'll still remember him as the ssssserpentine idiot with delusionssssss of grandeur who consssssissssstently had his butt handed to him by memberssssss of the Justice League both individually and en masssssse.

The Good Old Days - Comics
This comic has it all: rivalry between the three 'leader' villains Evil-Lyn, Skeletor and Hordak (a lot of this!) and a cool and lengthy fight between He-Man and Hordak.
He-Man is knocked unconcious by Kobra Khans new mist, but the Rock Warriors beat up the bad guys.
When the herd is calm again, Beast Man and Kobra Khan (who had caused the stampede) attack, but they stand no chance against the good guys.

 Fanzing 51 - December 2002 - From the Bookshelf
Seldom do super-hero comics revolve around the sum of their protagonist's experiences, who they are and what has made them, and integrate it all into the story in a meaningful way.
It would be an exaggeration to say that all of Wally's history plays a direct role in the current narrative, but the past is invoked in such a way as to suggest that those experiences did all lead him here, to this one deciding moment.
However, if you're a fan of the Impulse comic, you needn't consider this as a necessary prelude to that series; the Bart Allen you know and love will not be found within.

TwoMorrows Publishing - The Creation of King Kobra - Kirby Collector Twentysecond Issue
Writing King Kobra was not only one of the best experiences of my life, it was also one of the worst.
It marked the end of my "comic book" association with Jack Kirby; but it was interesting, because it did give me an insight into how masterful Jack could be in creating characters, and it taught me a few lessons that to this day come in handy when putting together ideas for presentation.
The genesis for King Kobra came about when publisher Carmine Infantino came to the conclusion first issues of comics sold really well, while the second and third issues tended to drop off, so he came up with the concept of First Issue Specials.

Also knowing that this comic volume was suppose to be something totally different with a story line that was ripped from a fans dream, and the simple fact that the comic is the only constant in the MOTU line, this poor little comic had a high expectation form the word go.
The comic moves into a new story that focuses on Prince Adam his dealing with a rare subject in the MOTU mythos, death.
The other plot in the comic, the Snake Men and their doings is also rehashed from the cartoon.

And its Action Comics was the first to feature a superhero — Superman, who quickly became the first hit character to emerge from the fledgling comic book medium, and the first character to star in his own regularly-published comic book.
Unlike most comics publishers, however, DC never put out the sort of gruesome horror and crime comics that brought on the protest that led to the formation of the Comics Code Authority.
DC Comics may or may not be the "Comics Publisher of the Century" — but considering its size, its staying power and its corporate connections, it's certainly one of the century's biggest successes in comics.

IGN: Comics in Context #90: Plume's Paradigm
Stern also draws an intriguing parallel between Kobra and Superman himself: both are orphans, and Superman has the power to establish himself as a ruler, even as a "god," just as Kobra, a self-proclaimed messiah, tries to do.
Superman was raised to think of himself as Clark Kent, an equal of the human community, and to work to help that community; Kobra was raised to think of himself as his "cobra cult's" messiah, the superior of everyone else, a godlike man whose word would be law.
While Stern has Kobra verbally assault America as immoral and unjust, Superman and his fellow members of the Justice League of America (spelled out on the cover and not reduced to an acronym as in today's comics) counter his arguments by showing through their actions what the American spirit is at its best.

Kobra gets his day in court this issue, going back to the now hauntingly resonant terrorist actions he took in an earlier story, and Johns and Goyer portray Kobra as the scary smart villain that I remember from his time in Ostrander's Suicide Squad.
Where I had problems were not in the portrayal of Kobra, but in the reactions of the court and the JSA.
I understand the heroic code is sometimes a little generous, but it seems to me like letting a mass-murderer escape rather than letting his fanatical followers burn themselves to death in his name is overly kind-hearted in light of the 9-11 parallels being made to Kobra's level of danger and previous actions.
