 Kobuleti Nature Reserve
The Kobuleti mires are unique because of their well-known sphagnum bogs, huge "pillows" formed by peat mosses in which northern relict plant species are growing, such as the insect eating Drosera rotundifolia, several Sphagnum species, as well as the characteristic rose bay rhodedendron ponticum and luteum.
The Kobuleti mires represent a unique example of percolation bog, in other words, the most southern example of boreal vegetation found in the entire Eurasian continent.
During excavations in the Ispani and Anaklia-Churia sphagnum bogs, settlements from the eneolithic early Bronze Age, dating back to the IV and III centuries BC, were found under the peat layers.
