	Kobzar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		A Kobzar (Ukrainian: kобзар) was a Ukrainian itinerant Cossack bard.
		After the abolition of Hetmanate by the Empress Catherine II of Russia the apellation "kobzar" was applied to all itinerant blind singers.
		In Ukraine kobzars were organized in Guilds, known as Kobzars'kyj Tsekh and had to undergo a rigorous apprenticeship (usually 3 years in length) before undergoing the first set of open examinations to become a kobzar.

	Bluffton University - Art: The Kobzar
		The Kobzar is based on a real person, a blind Ukrainian folk minstrel Klassen found performing in an opera house in St. Petersburg, and then paid to sit as a model.
		Klassen intended his original Kobzar sculpture to be a gift from the Mennonite to the Russian people in the early 1900s because "they were good to us." To his disappointment, the government did not accept this gift, as Soviet authorities were wary of rekindling Ukrainian nationalism.
		Klassen later sculpted the small statue of the Kobzar from memory as a symbol bridging the gap between Mennonites and the non-Mennonite world around them.

		These became the traditions of the itinerant musician known as the kobzar based on epic forms known as dumy, sacred psalms and cants, historic and humourous songs.

		The Kyiv Bandurist Capella was established initially as the Kobzar Choir in August 1918 under the direction of renown bandurist virtuoso - Vasyl Yemetz.

		In his sculpture, Bill Takes Art at Bluffton, Jack Earl '56 revisits The Kobzar, a well-known work of his respected Bluffton tutor John Klassen.

		One of the few surviving works illustrating these horrible times can be found in the UMA's collection.
		This is the extraordinary edition of Taras Shevchenko's Kobzar, featuring drawings by Vasyl Sedliar.
		Although the Kobzar was written in the 19th Century, the 48 full-page sketches and the accompanying quotations from Shevchenko's poems, make it clear that Sedliar and his editor Andriy Richytsky (1890-1934) were commenting on Stalin's Famine and not Tsarist Russia.
