Kochab, an obscure Arabic name that might simply mean "star," is just barely the second brightest, and appropriately the Beta, star in Ursa Minor, and represents the top front bowl star of the Little Dipper.
Polaris is thus only a temporary pole star that will get better into the next century and then will begin to shift away.
Unlike the Sun, Kochab (which is not particularly unusual among its class), has run out of internal hydrogen fuel, and is an evolving orange giant star that is now running for awhile on the fusion of helium deep in its core.

Like its bowl-mate Kochab, Pherkad is a giant star, but one considerably hotter, at the warm side of class A with a temperature of 8600 Kelvin.
From its distance of 480 light years, we calculate a high luminosity 1100 times that of the Sun, double that of Kochab, yielding a radius 15 times solar.
As a warm giant, and a bright one at that, the star is evolving, probably with a for-now quiet helium core surrounded by a ring of fusing hydrogen, its current temperature and luminosity suggesting a mass of around five times solar.

The Official Graham Hancock Website: Forum
The main 'breakthrough' hailed by the media concerns the accurate dating of the Great Pyramid by modelling the precession of the transit of two stars, Kochab (in Ursa Minor) and Mizar (in Ursa Major), at the north meridian of the sky.
What IS original to me (and NOT to Kate Spence) is the use of Kochab (and other stars such as Sirius and Zeta Orionis) to arrive at a more accurate date of 2450 BC ± 25 years.
The other two aspects of Kate Spence's thesis, where she alleges all the Pyramid Builders supposedly used her 'invisible line' (formed though Kochab, the pole and Mizar) and that this technique explains variation in the error of alignment of different pyramids, are in fact original to her.

In fact, Bauval's interest in Kochab is linked to Rudolf Gantenbrink's initial estimate of the elevation angle of the north shaft of the Queen's Chamber.
Bauval reports (_The Orion Mystery_, page 173, U.S. edition) that the shaft appears to be targeted on "the centre of the four stars forming the 'head' of Ursa Minor" and later asserts the intended target was Kochab.
Under the circumstances, Bauval's discussion about the symbolic meaning of the upper culmination of Kochab remains speculative and in any case has nothing to do with the observational process of establishing the meridian Kate Spence describes.
