If to believe the researchers, who claim that the ethnic group of Kociewiacy (the people of Kociewie) appeared in the 12th century due to blending of the local people of Pomorze with the influx settlers from the areas of Chełm and Kujawy, one could risk the statement, that Kociewie is about 800 years old.
The charm of the region's landscape varied relief (Starogardzkie Lake District, Świecka Plain, also Góry Diabelskie Devil Hills), fine lakes and forests (part of Bory Tucholskie The Tuchola Forests) evoked the decision to establish two landscape preservation parks: the Wda Landscape Park and the Vistula Landscape Park.
Kociewiacy a mixed ethnic group, which used to be divided into three sub-groups (Górale, Polusowie, Lasacy), inhabits this beautiful land.

Friedrich Lorentz assumes that at least the dialects of the Kociewiacy and Borowiacy were originally Pomeranian, but became Polonized due to Polish colonization of their territories.
On the other hand, the dialect of the Krajniacy, according to Lorentz, was probably originally Polish.
