The east border of the area of Kociewie constitutes the one-hundred-kilometre long part of the Vistula River, from the town of Świecie to the village of Koźliny (north of Tczew).
The capitol of Kociewie is the town of Starogard Gdański.
The cultural life of Kociewie was concentrated around the three main centres: Tczew at the north, Starogard as the capitol of the area, and Świecie at the south, even though the 800-hundred-years old Skarszewya and the charmingly situated Nowe also found their places in the history of the region.

For many this was the first-time trip to their ancestors' land and Paul Klemick, who coordinated the trip, having been to that region before, had organised an interesting programme for the group.
During the meetings with the Starogard Gdanski City and Regional Councils' representatives (Starogard Gdanski is a capital of Kociewie region) Paul gave presentations about Polish settlement from the Kociewie region in the Otago and Southland regions in 1870s.
During their stay in Kociewie the group was greeted with an old Polish custom chlebem i sola, bread and salt, and experienced very warm Polish hospitality.

One is a village to the west called Kocien Wielke and another to the north called Kociewie.
The longer I study Polish names, the clearer it becomes that names ending in -ewski usually -- not always, but usually -- derive from names of places.
