KODUNGALLOOR: Kodungalloor had been a bastion of the Communist Party of India (CPI) till the 2001 Assembly elections when Umesh Challiyil of the Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithi (JSS) won the seat for the United Democratic Front.
While development remains the key electoral issue on the surface at least, political equations are an underlying factor in Kodungalloor.
The Kodungalloor municipality and all the panchayats, Perinjanam, Mathilakam, Sree Narayana Puram, Edavilangu, Eriyadu and Methala, in the constituency are ruled by the Left Front.

 Thrissur, Cultural capital of Kerala - Cocohol
The Lourdes Cathedral, Puthan Pally Church, Vadkkunathan temple, the Guruvayoor temple, Kodungalloor mosque are the famous religious institutions in Thrissur.

The 'Metropolitan' changed his residence from Kodungalloor to Angamaly in the 16th Century due to certain Political reasons.
Again on June 22, 1978, Pope Paul VI separated the entire taluk of Kodungalloor, greater part of Mukundapuram and small portions of Paravoor and Aluva to the north of the river Chalakudy from the Eparchy of Trichur and erected the Eparchy of Irinjalakuda by the Apostolic Bull "Trichuriensis Eparchiae".

The legend is that Mor Joseph had a startling dream (vision) in which he saw the plight of the Christian church in Malabar established by St. Thomas, the Apostle, in the 1st Century.
Copper plates given to the Jews (kept in the Mattancherry Synagogue) were handed to Joseph Rabban, a first century merchant of Kodungalloor, just as Knai Thoma was given similar copper plates during the fourth century.
In the songs shared by both groups, it is mentioned that three kings fought bravely and fell when Kodungalloor was burned down in 1524 and the descendants of these three kings, Cheraman Perumal, Joseph Rabban and Knai Thoma fought valiantly to save their town.

They built a town in Kodungalloor with a church and 72 houses.

I have read (just can't remember in which book) that when Hinduism was gaining a stronger presence in Kerala (I guess during Sankaraacharya's time) the Hindu scholars defeated Buddhist scholars in a debate and forced them to leave their temples.
The History of Kodungalloor, and the temple are indeed fascinating.
Mathilakam town is very close to Kodungalloor, when traveling from Guruvayoor to Kodungalloor.

There are similarities in composition and linguistics and the songs of both groups begin by invoking the name of the Almighty.
These similarities suggest that the Malabar Jews and the Knanaya Christians (who are of Jewish origin) were living in close contact with each other in Kodungalloor sharing similar legends, Biblical stories, and traditions from a common origin between 345 and 1524 AD.

 The Ponnattu Family
A Brahmin family of Kodungalloor converted to Christianity by the Apostle Saint Thomas in the first century A.D., fled Kodungalloor in the 4th century A.D., eventually settled down in Kuravilangadu, and at some point received the title of Arkadiyakon (Arch Deacon) meaning Karthavyan which transformed into Kathanar, denoting church and community leadership.
Actually the Pakalomattom family was not from Kodungalloor, but from a nearby village called Palayoor, presently known as Chavakkadu.
After fleeing south from Kodungalloor (more correctly, Chavakkadu) the Pakalomattom family stayed briefly (probably a few years) in several places on the Arabian Sea coast, such as Paravoor, Pallipuram, Thekkan Pallippuram, Gokkamangalam, etc., before arriving in Kuravilangadu.
