KOFARNIHON, 25 Jul 2002 (IRIN) - The vast majority of Tajikistan's adults suffer from some kind of infectious disease, and there is a desperate need for basic health education, especially in rural areas, aid workers say.
In Kofarnihon there was a chronic problem of malaria, diarrhoea and dysentery, caused primarily by drinking dirty water.
At the session in Kofarnihon, all 20 villagers present said they had not boiled water until they were told to do so during a class.

There's been a delay in the withdrawal of forces of Tajikistan's mainly Islamic opposition, the United Tajik Opposition, UTO,from the town of Kofarnihon, east of the capital, Dushanbe.
The area was the scene of extensive fighting between government and opposition troops until earlier this week, when tension eased after the release of sixteen captured government soldiers.
The Russian News Agency, Interfax, said that leaders from both sides would visit Kofarnihon on Saturday, to talk to their respective troops and to arrange the withdrawal of both sides from the town.
