Nigeria was a founding member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the early 1970s, and its status as a major petroleum producer figures prominently in international relations, particularly with developed countries.

This was due to popular demand from indegenes of the state who felt the then governor was not justified to have the university named after himself.
The University though holds a lot of promises for indigenes of the states and its environs who over the years have been denied an indegenious university of their own.

Nigeria was suspended from the Commonwealth almost immediately, and sanctions were placed against the country, including oil sanctions, which accounted for over 90% of the nation's exports.
The nations of the world are giving Nigeria the benefit of a doubt, and they are convinced enough of Abubakar's intentions, and they have temporarily removed sanctions against the country, and temporarily reinstated Nigeria into the Commonwealth, all to aid with the transition to democracy.

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Kogi state chapter has decried the situation whereby civil servants in the state were denied the rights of belonging to the appropriate unions and associations commensurate with their status.
The association’s scribe therefore appealed to Kogi state government to expedite action on the release of the circular directing the civil servants in the state to join the appropriate trade union.
On lack of accommodation for civil servants in the state, Kolawole appealed to Governor Ibrahim Idris to complete the 500 housing units embarked upon by the state government to ease the suffering of the workers.
