TMMSN Species Corner: Pygmy and Dwarf Sperm Whales (Kogia spp.)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Although generally reported as rare, Kogias' commonly strand and are taken directly and indirectly by fisheries.
Pygmy and dwarf sperm whales are probably not rare, but are not common sightings, because of their offshore distribution and small group sizes.
Most of the confirmed Kogia sightings were determined to be dwarf sperm whales.

CMS: Kogia sima, Dwarf sperm whale
On the side of the head, between the eye and the flipper, there is often a crescent-shaped, light-coloured mark referred to as a "false gill" (McAlpine, 2002).
Thus the correct spelling of the scientific name of the dwarf sperm whale is Kogia sima (Rice, 1998), as opposed to Kogia simus in most publications to date.
Because of their small size and habit of often lying at the surface, apparently oblivious to approaching vessels, a few Kogia are probably run down and injured or killed (Caldwell and Caldwell 1989).

Fishery Bulletin: Cetacean habitats in the northern Gulf of Mexico - Statistical Data Included
Of the 614 cetacean groups sighted between 1992 and 1994, the most frequently encountered species were the bottlenose dolphin, Risso's dolphin, Kogia spp., pantropical spotted dolphin, and sperm whale (Table 4).
To better capture the true spatial distributions, the location of each sighting and 1-km transect section was projected onto the 200-m isobath (by using the minimum distance to this isobath) and equal-effort sighting distributions were generated with respect to the distance along the 200-m isobath (Fig.
The bottlenose dolphin's median habitat was so different from the others that if this species was removed from each of the Mood's median tests, the null hypothesis of equal medians between species would be rejected for only depth (P [is less than] 0.01) and zooplankton biomass (P [is less than] 0.05).

ABSTRACT- Dwarf (Kogia sima) and pygmy (Kogia breviceps) sperm whales are the second most common single-stranded cetaceans in the Southeastern U.S. (SEUS) after the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).
Data on Kogia strandings have been gathered systematically by the volunteer members of the Southeastern U.S. Marine Mammal Stranding Network since 1978 and sporadically in prior years.
A preliminary comparison of annual Kogia stranding patterns with the Southern Oscillation Index shows a strong relationship with global oceanographic factors, especially in years of unusually high or low stranding totals.

Fishery Bulletin; 4/1/2001; Leming, Thomas D. Abstract--Surveys were conducted in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the spring seasons of 1992, 1993, and 1994 to determine the distribution, abundance, and habitat preferences of oceanic cetaceans.
(pygmy [Kogia breviceps] and dwarf sperm whales [Kogia sima]), pantropical spotted dolphins (Stenella attenuata), and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were examined with respect to depth, depth gradient, surface temperature, surface temperature variability, the depth of the 15 [degrees] isotherm, surface chlorophyll concentration, and epipelagic zooplankton biomass.
The correlation structure suggested that high values of zooplankton biomass and deep occurrences of the depth of the 15 [degrees] C isotherm were associated with positive values of the first canonical variable, whereas high values for depth and surface chlorophyll were associated with positive values of the second canonical variable (Fig.

I am a visiting research fellow from Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa and am currently completing the final year of my PhD studies on the natural history of pygmy (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf sperm whales (Kogia simus) from Southern Africa.
Little is known about the general biology of both pygmy and dwarf sperm whales and they are rarely observed in the wild.
The research I am doing here at the University of Auckland includes the examination of the genetic variation within the Kogia populations off South Africa and tries to help determine the distinctness of these populations to other Kogia populations in the Southern Hemisphere, including New Zealand and Australia.
