Military officials said the air chief, who was 55 and had held his job since November 2000, and the others had been on their way to Kohat air base, where they planned to spend a few hours for an annual inspection before returning to Islamabad.
Residents of Kohat said it was cloudy at the time of the crash, but not raining.

The Kurrum River (Urdu: دریائے کرم) flows through the Kurrum Valley across the Afghan-Pakistani border west to east (crossing from the Paktia Province of Afghanistan into the Kohat border region of Pakistan) at 33°49′N 69°58′E, about 80 km southwest of Jalalabad.
The Turis on the first annexation of the Kohat district by the British had given much trouble.
They had repeatedly leagued with other tribes to harry the Miranzai valley, harbouring fugitives, encouraging resistance, and frequently attacking Bangash and Khattak villages in the Kohat district.

When the Afridis of the Kohat Pass misbehaved in 1850, the Jowaki Afridis offered the use of their route instead; but they turned out worse than the others, and in 18J3 a force of 1700 British traversed their country and destroyed their stronghold at Bori.
In that year the government proposed to reduce the Jowaki allowance for guarding the Kohat Pass, and the tribesmen resented this by cutting the telegraph wire and raiding into British territory.
After this both the Khyber and Kohat Passes were put on a stable footing, and no further trouble of any consequence occurred in either down to the time of the frontier risings of 1897, when the Afridis attacked the Khyber Pass, which was defended by Afridi levies.

KOHAT, Oct 21: The district government is considering a plan to impose tax on heavy vehicles using the four inter city routes of Kohat-Rawalpindi, Kohat-Bannu, Kohat-Parachinar and Kohat-Peshawar to generate funds for development projects in the area.
The district planning officer, Waheedur Rehman, informed Dawn on Thursday that the income of the district from its own resources was almost nil and it relied entirely on grants from the provincial and federal governments.
