Koinobori is usually a gift for new born boys from grandparents, so I sometimes see Koinobori raised up in the houses where no kids living but remotely celebrating their grandkids, and probably in the case where they can't raise Koinobori in the kids' home.
I took some photo of Koinobori while I was there, thinking of that I may blog about this day later (and actually taking a half month to do so).

"Koinobori" are generally placed on a flagpole, while at home, a display of warrior dolls, or miniature suits of armor called "satsuki-ningyo", was celebrated.
At the beginning people used "Washi" (famous Japanese paper well known to architects and painters) to produce "Koinobori" but later on they switched to cotton, which is cheaper and allows an industrial production.
"Koinobori" can be made using a technique called "Tegaki" (hand painting) which is very detailed and elegant (while being expensive), and also quite appreciated for its artistic value.

Our sensei had us fly koinobori of various sizes around the football field in order to celebrate the Boys' Day festival (although I must admit I spent more time trying to wear the largest of the koinobori as a "fishsuit" than anything else, "dame kunihiko san!
Shelly gave me my very own koinobori last year, and another one of greater size this year.
