Takashi Koizumi, one of Kurosawa's assistants, went ahead with the production that includes featured performances from Kurosawa alumi such as leading man Akira Terao (Akira Kurosawa's Dreams), Yoshiko Miyazaki (Ran), Hisashi Igawa (Akira Kurosawa's Dreams), and Tatsuya Nakadai (Kagemusha).
This was also the final bow for master composer Masaru Sato (Ambush at Blood Pass, Yojimbo) who died in 1999.
There is a sense that Koizumi is trying too hard to replicate the mood of Kurosawa's films without paying enough attention to the characterizations.
