For Kojak, this involves a "dragon." As he tells Carmen, there's one in every case that eventually emerges from its cave for him to slay with his big sword (to be cute, perhaps, she offers to help him "hold up" his sword).
Your man Kojak is appalled when he learns this supposed model detective, all clean cut and impressive, sees the junkie-whore's life as unimportant compared to his career and all the criminals she's helped him put away over the years (with false testimony he bullies her to provide).

The character of Theo Kojak was introduced in a 1973 TV movie, The Marcus-Nelson Murders (in which his last name was spelled "Kojack"), and was popular enough that a series was quickly commissioned.
In the early episodes of the series, Kojak smoked heavily; in order to reflect the anti-smoking sentiment then gaining momentum on American TV, it was decided that Kojak had decided to quit smoking, sucking on lollipops as a substitute.
In 1980, a low-budget Hungarian movie was made titled Kojak Budapesten (Kojak in Budapest) about Kojak (played by Savalas' look-alike László Inke, who had also dubbed Savalas' voice for the Hungarian distribution of Kojak) visiting the country and solving a murder case there.

Yesterday we were as pleased as punch (that's an odd saying isn't it?) to bring you Universal's announcement that Kojak - Season 1 was coming to DVD on March 8th.
Don't forget that this DVD release is a tie-in to the USA Network release of the new Ving Rhames version of Kojak, which was so satisfying to the network that they immediately ordered the approval of a new weekly TV series with Rhames, before the new TV movie even aired!
It's good to see that the character is in such capable hands; we wish the new production team well and look forward to seeing a well-done revisit to our bald-headed protector.
