A former civil servant (hence his psuedonym Yakusho), he's appeared in several of the top Japanese films and such is his fame that he currently appears in two different television commercials - one for Kirin Ichiban Shibori and the other for an insurance company.
Yakusho plays the main lead with a fine sensitivity, hesitant to enter the dance-school and nervously gazing at the object of his affection when he should be learning his steps.
Yakusho here plays a guilt-ridden murderer who emerges from his spell in prison cowed and withdrawn.

Midnight Eye review: Séance (2000, Kiyoshi KUROSAWA)
Produced by Kansai Television and based on the Mark McShane novel Séance on a Wet Afternoon, it is the story of Koji Sato (Koji Yakusho), a sound effects artist for TV and film, and his wife Junko (Jun Fubuki), a freelance psychic medium.
While Koji is in the woods collecting sound effects, Yoko, a little girl who is fleeing her kidnapper, accidentally locks herself in his equipment case.
From the outside, the fact that Junko and Koji decide to keep the missing girl prisoner in their house in order to achieve some sort of societal legitimacy (here represented by the police) can only be viewed as a selfish action.
