After the proclamation of the Orange River Sovereignty in 1848, however, Kok was stripped of jurisdiction outside the reserve and lost the leasable land, while whites steadily encroached on the reserve itself.
In 1861, the Griquas decided to sell their remaining farms to the Orange Free State, and some 2000 people moved across the Drakensberg, suffering considerable privations en route to 'Nomansland' on the eastern side of the mountain range, which became known as Griqualand East.
Kokstad was founded as the main settlement, but in the early 1870s the east Griqua began to lose their farms to whites, a process which accelerated after Cape officials arrived in Kokstad in 1874 and after Kok's death in 1875.

Though the cabinets of Wim Kok have been quite successful in certain areas, after the collapse of purple due to the NIOD (Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie; Dutch Institute for War Documentation) report into the fall of Srebrenica in 1995, politicians of all three parties turned away from the achievements of purple.
The Dutch people were notably discontent at that time, partly because of the seeming lack of responsibility taken by the purple cabinets over the previous eight years, and partly because of a declining economy.
