After four decades, there is a chance the Kokborok language could finally, and officially, use the Roman script.
The biggest casualties in the fight over the Kokborok script are students in schools where the language is taught.
As a result, the primary and secondary schools of the council areas, which teach Kokborok, are thrown into turmoil because the script, the textbooks and pedagogic strategies change with bewildering regularity - in fact, 16 times in 20 years.

Tussles between the state government and tribal intellectuals has loomed large on the issue while the government has been highlighting the role of the left front in extending recognition to Kokborok, the “Movement for Kokborok” has been focusing on the “apathy and lack of far-sightedness” of the left front in its language policy.
