The Kokoda Track itself is single-file track starting just outside Port Moresby on the Coral Sea and (depending on definition) runs 60–100 kilometres through the Owen Stanley Ranges to Kokoda and the coastal lowlands beyond by the Solomon Sea.
The track is passable only on foot; this had extreme repercussions for logistics, the size of forces and the type of warfare conducted on the Track.
Kokoda was captured by the Japanese on July 29.

The Kokoda Track or Kokoda Trail is single-file track starting at Ower's Corner 50 km east of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and runs 90 km overland (60 km as the crow flies) through the Owen Stanley Range to Kokoda.
The track crosses some of the most rugged and most isolated terrain in the world and it is only passable on foot.
The track record for completion is by Papuan New Guinean John Hunt Hiviki who completed it in 22 hours, one minute and 14 seconds on 28 August 2005.

This prompted Bernard Long to write in to say that in wartime Brisbane, the Kokoda Trail was known as 'The Owen Stanley Track', while another correspondent, Ray Hellier, told us that he owns a map of the area, actually used by Australian troops in New Guinea, on which 'tracks' not 'trails' are cited.
A 'track' is a well-defined walking path with markers and guide points, like those plaques which invite you to admire a tree.
And since we use both 'trail' and 'track', meaning different kinds of paths through the bush, it won't be a surprise if they lose any overtones of ours versus theirs, and merge equally into our general vocabulary.
