Kokoro is a common Japanese word that carries meanings conveyed by the English words “mind” and “heart.” It is used as an equivalent of the Chinese word xin and covers almost the same range of meanings.
Originally, kokoro referred to the beat of the heart, which was considered to be the essential organ of life and the source of all activities.
Kokoro (xin, shin, heart/mind) ultimately refers to the entire network of interdependent origination in which we are born, live, and die, and to which we awaken through our practice.

 Jonathon Delacour: Kokoro
In Japanese it’s pronounced kokoro or shin, depending on the context.
In NO way does "kokoro" mean "mind." And you misinterpret Hearn, the "heart of things" in Japanese would be "hara." Japanese people do not believe the soul is centered in the heart, they believe it to reside in the belly (hara).
There is a duality between hara and kokoro, they are in opposition, the kokoro is the emotional irrational part of one's personality, and the hara is the deeper stable part.
