Kokstad is named after the Griqua chief Adam Kok III who settled here.
In the 1860s the Griqua tribe which lived in Griquatown split and under the leadership of Adam Kok III, descendent of the ex-cook who established the tribe, one section first moved to Philipolis, then across the Drakensberg to the vicinity of the modern Kokstad.

The town of Kokstad is indeed fortunate for the location of what is the largest Super-Maximum Prison in the Southern Hemisphere to be such a launching pad for changing the lives of the people of Kokstad.
In order to locate the Kokstad Prison within both the broad context of our socio-economic objectives and Local Economic Development, it is important to examine the opportunities that a facility such as this exposes to the local people.
Moreover, the Kokstad prison was well thought out in its location bordering the Provinces of Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape, in bridging the economies of both provinces.

Kokstad's Origins   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
In these early days of Kokstad money was so scarce that nearly all transactions that took place were by way of barter - even taxes collected by the Raad were often of a four-footed kind.
In 1874 the first buildings in Kokstad were erected including the Griqua Church and Dower counted about eighty houses dotted across the plain.
And so if we look at the remarkable origins of Kokstad we see a city which was founded by the first inhabitants of South Africa, a people who left their name across great tracts of the country - Griqualand West and East Griqualand.
