Koktebel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Koktebel (Ukrainian: Коктебель, Russian: Коктебель, Crimean Tatar: Köktöbel), formerly known as Planerskoye, is one of the most popular resort townlets in South-Eastern Crimea.
Koktebel is situated on the shore of the Black Sea about halfway between Theodosia and Sudak and is subordinated to the Theodosia city municipality.
The original name Koktebel is of Turkic origin: in Crimean Tatar it means "the land of the blue hills" (kök - blue or sky, töbe - hill, el - land).

Koktebel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Koktebel is a beach resort in the Crimea, on the Black Sea, in a geographical area where the protection of steep mountain slopes has created a subtropical climate.
Koktebel, then, is a road movie, the story of their journey, both literally and--could it be otherwise?--metaphorically.
Adding to the conceit of freedom though flying, as well as the attraction of Koktebel, is that the town, due to prevailing winds, is a center for gliding; there's even a monument to gliders.

 Roads to Koktebel
Koktebel is the very simple story of a journey taken by a man and his 11 year-old son after the death of the man's wife.
Much to the bored but quiet impatience of the son their journey is delayed and hampered – by the father's alcoholism; by taking odd jobs; and particularly by a young doctor who attends to the father's wounds after he is hurt in a confrontation with a gruff rural landowner.
Koktebel is a tremendously assured and patient film which encapsulates the period of change from being a child to being a grown-up.

Black Sea travel - Crimea - Voloshin's house at Koktebel
Koktebel, in turn, adopted him, and when local people pointed out to him that the rocky profile of a bearded man, clearly visible on the nearby Kok-Kaya headland above the sea looked very like him, he saw it as a symbol of his identification with the area and referred to it in his poem `Koktebel'.
Voloshin was one of the first to recognise his talent and continued to encourage him after his return to Moscow to face a barrage of criticism for his sympathetic portrayal of a group of White Army officers during the civil war, and the book's lack of a communist hero.
The ground floor of the house on the Koktebel seafront is a formal exhibition of watercolours by the artist, along with a collection of memorabilia, including `Order no. 44' of 1920 - an instruction to revolutionary soldiers not to touch the house (Lenin is said to have taken a personal interest in ensuring Voloshin's safety).

Koktebel is a debut feature film by two young directors, critic Boris Khlebnikov (born 1972; graduate of the Film Theory Sector of the State Institute for Filmmaking) and psychologist Aleksei Popogrebskii (born 1972; graduate of the Psychology Department of Moscow State University).
So it is significant that the father and son are travelling not to Planerskoye (the present) but to Koktebel (the past), which was the resort of choice for the Russian intelligentsia of the pre-revolutionary, pre-Soviet Silver Age.
In addition to being a classic road movie, Koktebel is also a buddy film, focusing on the bonds between the fellow travellers and erasing meaningless differences of age and experience, just as their lives together have blurred the distinctions between adult and child.

 Koktebel
Koktebel is full of Petersburgers, and has been ever since the artist and poet Maximilian Voloshin settled here in the early years of this century and welcomed the northern intellegentsia and artists with open house.
They always take rooms in the same house under the Karadag, a part of the village where the houses lurch together promiscuously on their way down the hill and, at dusk, murmurs of conversation float out into the street from vine-hung courtyards where people sit long over supper.
(2) Although it is true to say that Koktebel is part of St Petersburg, the same could be said, with equal justification, of a number of other places on the Crimean coast, each of which attract a faithful - and rather specialized - contingent of Petersburgers year after year.

A road movie set in the countryside between Moscow and Crimea, Koktebel (the name of a Crimean city), focuses on the relationship between a father and son escaping from bad memories in Moscow.
But these characters are not necessarily mere products of their age; Khlebnikov and Popogrebsky allow for the possibility, if not necessarily the actualization, of transcendence in all cases.
An unnamed Father (Gleb Puskepalis), who looks to be in his late 30s, leaves Moscow with his 11-year-old son (Igor Chernevich), to escape a guilty past that includes the death of his wife and years of profound alcoholism.

Yet this simple and unadorned odyssey, which follows the 1000-mile journey of an 11-year-old boy and his father from Moscow to the seaside resort of Koktebel in the Crimea, is a road movie of great sensitivity and human appeal.
It was made by Boris Khlebnikov and Alexei Popogrebsky, two young film-makers who have directed shorts together but only one of whom has studied film.

Koktebel - Review by Garreth Murphy - entertainment ireland, Cinema, Film Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
A sombre Russian drama, Koktebel charts the journey of father and son across the barren Russian landscapes to the titular Crimean city where hopefully things will be better.
Brooding and slow moving, Koktebel is a minimal drama, in which dialogue and dramatic incident are used rather sparingly.
Somewhat reminiscent of Andrei Zvyagintsev's The Return but lacking that film's emotional penetration, Koktebel is elegant and understated, but it fails to do anything really telling with its characters.

Koktebel – a resort town in the Crimea – is the holy grail for a father (Igor Chernevich) and his young son (Gleb Puskepalis), whom we first encounter wandering along a remote, rural road.
It’s hard not to compare ‘Koktebel’ to ‘The Return’, one of the year’s best films.
They’re both Russian, of course, but both also explore a fragile father-son relationship that is clearly informed by past events of which we know (and discover) very little.

Winner of the grandly titled "Revelation of the Year" award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004, this Russian road movie from debut writer-directors Boris Khlebnikov and Aleksei Popogrebsky is a curiously understated drama that benefits immensely from its evocative setting.
As their episodic journey unfolds, the mystery of their backstory is slowly revealed: the boy's mother has recently died prompting the father, a former aviation engineer, to lose his job and slip into the depths of vodka-fuelled despair.
The trip is his penniless attempt to start a new life and rediscover his self-respect by rebuilding bridges with his 11-year-old son.

A widowed father (Igor Chernevich) with a drink problem and his withdrawn 11-year-old son (Gleb Puskepalis) embark on foot on an epic journey south from Moscow to the Crimean town of Koktebel.
Co-directed by young Russian filmmakers Boris Khlebnikov and Alexei Popogrebsky, this is a lyrical and laconic road movie which echoes that other recently released post-Soviet tale of a symbolic father-son journey, The Return.
It may lack the latter’s compelling mysteriousness, but Koktebel benefits from some effectively understated lead performances and accomplished cinematography, which captures the stark beauty of the autumnal landscapes its unnamed characters traverse.
