In 1876 Kokura prefecture was absorbed by Fukuoka prefecture.
Kokura was the primary target of the nuclear weapon "Fat Man" on August 9, 1945, but since the city was obscured by clouds and Major Charles Sweeney of the Bockscar had orders to drop the bomb visually, they moved on to Nagasaki, the secondary target, where they dropped their lethal weapon.

Kokura would have been the site for the second atomic bomb dropped in the Second World War were it not for heavy cloud cover on the day, meaning Nagasaki was the unfortunate substitute.
Kokura has a fine castle albeit a 1950s reconstruction and the shopping areas are convenient and abundant in variety all within easy walking distance of the station.
