Both kokyu and what I like to call equanimity, are fundamental aspects of our practice.
It occurs to me, that kokyu and equanimity are not the same.
Kokyu is a Japanese word, of course, that mean "breath" or "breath power".

Kokyu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In central Japan, the kokyu was formerly used as an integral part of the sankyoku ensemble, along with the koto and shamisen, but beginning in the 20th century the shakuhachi most often plays the role previously filled by the kokyu.
The kokyu has also been used in jazz and blues, with the American multi-instrumentalist Eric Golub pioneering the instrument's use in these non-traditional contexts.
The kokyu is similar to two Chinese bowed lutes with fingerboards: the leiqin and the zhuihu.

Due to the size of its body as a resonator that is a little smaller than shamisen's and the tension of strings, its volume (sound level) is rather small(weak), comparing to shamisen's which usually played by a plectrum and its timbrel character sounds percussive.
If Kokyu is played with an ensemble of louder instruments such as shamisen, shakuhachi, or percussion (mostly every instrument), it is strongly recommended that it sounds in a reasonable acoustic condition in terms of texture of the ensemble as an acoustic context.
On Kokyu playing, the body of the instrument is spun by left hand that also holds fingerboard, when moving form one string to another, unlike the string alternation on violoncello that depends on the angle of right had that holds a bow.

The Okinawan traditions related to ki and kokyu (note that it's no coincidence that everyone uses those same 2 terms to describe the same phenomena and abilities) are pretty much unapologetically derived from traditions stemming out of the Yi Jin Jing and also the Marrow Washing classic.
O-Sensei's ki and kokyu practices are purportedly derived from Shinto (specifically the Hada traditions of the Kojiki), but I think there are too many of his comments and practices that mirror the Chinese practices for the same skills to possibly overlook.
I suspect that Ueshiba's use of "kokyu" was closer to way "spirare" came to be used, relating it to the indwelling of the spirit or to the breath of God.

One distinction between the Piano and Kokyu Memories albums is that the piano arrangements are often rather divergent from the original piece of music, while the kokyu arrangements tend to hew pretty closely to the original interpretation.
Track 9, Shuurai Rensa, is a rendition of the battle theme from the first soundtrack album that simply overlays a kokyu line onto the existing music, but it still adds some depth to the track that improves on the original.
The Kokyu Memories album is also generally available for the same low price as the Piano memories album, so its price shouldn’t keep you from owning it.

Kokyu power is often thought of as related to breathing.
Even though he appeared to be in one place standing, his mind was moving, the physical technique of irimi was already done in his Mind before his opponenets ever saw the physical manifestation of the movement.
So in the case posed by Hooker Sensei of katatetori it is important to realize that it is the movement of the Mind that becomes the ki extension in the physical arm and when coupled with the most minute rotation of the hips, almost invisible at times, becomes a manifestation of kokyu.

In such a case it would be much better for a student to say plainly that he or she does not practice meiso ho or kokyu ho.
A simple reason for this may be that persons qualified to teach these facets of Aikido training have always been scarce; today's generation of teachers have mostly been raised with, at best, a minimal exposure to this type of training.
Since meiso ho and kokyu ho are part of our formal promotion test requirements, it is mandatory that students have an experience of them and understand their method and intention.
