Horde - wiki.kolab.org   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The fork happened somewhere around 2004/05/31 and the code in the kolab repository did not see any of the security patches that were applied to the horde code since then.
Since the horde packages are used as a library within the other PHP based packages of the kolab server it would be desireable to upgrade to the current version of the horde code.
The main part of the current development on Horde is done in the framework of the Kolab on Gentoo project.

One of the design goals of Kolab has been to avoid the need of a database backend.
You will also need to specify a Kolab account in the Administrators field in order to re-configure Horde at a later stage (as well as to complete configuration of the remaining applications!).
It is recommended that you create a Kolab account such as horde-admin@my.kolab.domain for this purpose.

Kolab - A OSS Groupware Solution
Kolab clients must be able to support multiple accounts per user, each of which possibly containing email messages, calendaring data, contacts, tasks, etc. Account owners can assign different access rights to other users, and accounts may even be „functional“, i.e., they belong to a group of people working together (e.g., the members of a project).
However, in the case of resources, the Kolab server itself handles the acceptance (in case the resource is available) or rejection (in case the resource is already booked for the requested date and time).
Kolab 2.0 will be tested against the Toltec connector, but of course any plugin (there are others in the making, such as the one by Source eXtreme, which will even be open source) that follows the Kolab standards can be used.

The Kolab project is a KDE related groupware project and builds on the result of the Kroupware project which was sponsored by the German Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) (Federal Agency of IT-Security).
Kolab Client does the whole groupware related logic on the client and uses the IMAP4 mail protocol to store address and appointment objects in the iCalendar and vCard formats.
Unfortunately the Kolab client is not yet part of the standard KDE stable releases, actually the integration into KDE seems to be stuck since it isn't covered in the Kroupware project (according to a mail by Bo Thorsen).

A second look at Kolab as a groupware server | Richmond Open Source Community
When I last looked at Kolab as a groupware server, I came away feeling it was not a good fit, in part because the storage model didn't make sense to me.
Kolab can quite readily share all kinds of groupware resources, including calendars and contacts, through shared IMAP folders.
It's not necessary to involve an LDAP server for this, nor is it even necessary for users to use this set of IMAP folders for their e-mail, if simple a sharing scheme is sufficient.
