Calcutta, Aug. 7: The authorities of Kolaghat Thermal Power Plant were hauled up and fined by the pollution control board today for violating environment norms by neglecting handling of the fly ash generated.
Narayan Chandra Naik and Ranjit Naik of the Krishak Sangram Parisad had complained that “allergy and irritation of the skin were common (symptoms) and diarrhoea cases had begun” to appear among the 2,000-odd people in the past few days.
They accused the Kolaghat unit of sending too few pumps to clear the ash water and for failing to arrange adequate drinking water.

Kolaghat, Feb 7: IBP Co Ltd, the government-owned company under petroleum ministry has tied up with the South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) to set up a retail petroleum outlet at Kolaghat in Midnapur district of West Bengal on National Highway no 6.
Oil companies would develop, maintain, manage and operate these outlets by engaging their officials and staff, while ownership of land (2.1 acre for Kolaghat) would lie with SBSTC on behalf of the state government.
IBP's Kolaghat outlet will be the first such one in the eastern and northeastern region.

KOLKATA: A breach in the embankment of a fly ash slurry pond at the Kolaghat Thermal Power Station forced over a thousand residents of adjoining Bon Mecheda, Andulia and Ruxa Chowk villages to flee as the hazardous slush invaded their homes and led to an emergency shut-down of the Kolaghat plant.
Kolaghat generates 3,500 tonne of fly ash a day when the six 120-MW units operate full-throttle.
While one unit is under scheduled maintenance shut-down, three of the remaining five were hastily shut to prevent a catastrophe.

 Malaysian team bags Bengal highway contract
THE Malaysian consortium of Road Builder (M) and Pati has bagged the construction contract for the four-laning of the 64-km long stretch between Kolaghat and Kolkata in West Bengal at an estimated cost of about Rs 447 crore.
Till date, the biggest highway package to be implemented by NHAI was the four-laning of the 64 km-long section between Kolaghat and Kharagpur, constructed by Hindustan Construction Co. Ltd at a cost of Rs 391 crore.

WBPDCL, which runs the 210x6 Kolaghat Thermal Power Station and the 3x210 Bakreswar Thermal Power Station (the third unit of which has recently been synchronised) and acts as WBSEB's captive source, will sign a fresh power purchase agreement with WBSEB.
The latter will henceforth be responsible only for generation and distribution of electricity besides running a few hydel capacity plants.
Power department sources said that WBPDCL, which employed 1.44 people per MW in Kolaghat and 1.25 people in Bakreswar, was keen on taking only around 2,000 people for these plants whose capacities had been substantially derated.

In 2000, the company tied up with Heavy Water Board, under the Department of Atomic Energy, for NH3 flue gas conditioning for the domestic thermal power sector using coal.
The company has so far installed flue gas conditioning systems in four thermal power stations: Ukai TPS of Gujarat Electricity Board, Gurunanakdev TPS of Punjab State Electricity Board, Kolaghat TPS in West Bengal and Durgapur Projects Ltd. While the 1st three FGC systems have been installed, the one at Durgapur is under implementation.

KOLKATA: A preliminary probe into the sudden blockage of water inlet at Kolaghat Thermal Power Station has indicted contractors engaged in the National Highway golden quadrilateral project and West Bengal State Electricity Board for the crisis.
Contractors working on NH6 – especially those engaged in construction of the second road bridge across Rupnarayan river – have been dumping sand and sludge.
Kolkata Port Trust officials, who were at Kolaghat to inspect the site on Friday, said it would take at least a month-and-a-half to provide a larger dredger than the two that were currently under operation.
