Kote or the fort area once encompassed the temples of Kolaramma, Someshwara and was bordered by the Kolarammana Kere.
Now the fort is all but gone, disappeared into new residential areas, the collapse of old town was hastened by the British Christian Missionaries who constructed a Church and school next to the temples.
The major and important temples in the town are Kolaramma Temple and Someswara Temple.

According to the Mysore District Gazetteer, the deity in the sanctum was Mahishasuramardini, known popularly as Kolaramma.
A pit near the sub shrine to the left of the sanctum is identified as the habitat of the scorpions.
One of the most outstanding examples of plastic art in the Kolaramma temple is the slab depicting a battle scene, now placed on the front platform of the entrance.

Ancient "Kuvalalapura" the first capital of the Gangas, has the famous Kolaramma temple.
Originally of the Gangas, later it was renovated by the Cholas.
Kolaramma is Mahishamardini and she is one among the seven Mothers (Sapta Matrikas) installed there.
