	The Hindu : Tamil Nadu / Thanjavur News : Kollidam yet again demonstrates its use as flood carrier
		While 2.25 lakh cusecs was released into the Kollidam — 1.50 lakh cusecs from the Upper Anicut and 75,000 cusecs from the Grand Anicut — at 8 a.m.
		It was a well thought-out decision to divert the surplus into the Kollidam without flooding the Cauvery, the Vennar or the Grand Anicut canal.
		While the possibility of conveying the surplus water from the Kollidam through a new canal to Pudukottai district from the Grand Anicut can be explored, the river, with a width of 1.8 km, that runs for nearly 160 km should be left as a flood carrier, as its importance was demonstrated after 44 years.

		After a gap of 40 years, the Kollidam river, the major flood carrier, was in spate, that too twice.
		The Grand Anicut saw hectic activity on November 25 when 3.37 lakh cusecs of water had to be diverted into the Kollidam from it, one of the oldest dams in Asia, built by a Chola ruler several centuries ago.
		WITH a 57.5 km-long coastline, Cuddalore district serves as the natural confluence for seven major rivers - the Kollidam, the Vadavar, the Vellar, the Manimuktha, the Gedilam, the Penniayar and the Paravanar.

		The Kollidam-Keelanai Paasana Vivasayigal Sangham has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, not to sink giant bore wells in the Kollidam riverbed, and instead construct a barrage there to store water.
		In a representation to the District Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, the president of the Sangham, V. Kannan, noted that the Government's proposal to take up the bore well project had vindicated its stand that the New Veeranam project was not technically feasible.
