Although it is obvious that Kolob Arch is one of the largest natural arches in the world, its dimensions have not been known with much certainty prior to this paper.
Kolob Arch in Zion National Park, Utah, is classified as an adult alcove natural arch within the standard taxonomy published by the Natural Arch and Bridge Society.
These two features of Kolob Arch, the redistribution of much of its weight horizontally into the cliff to the north and the support lent to it by the "ledge", are also responsible for another important characteristic of the arch — its size.

As mentioned earlier, the best time to see the arch is in the morning, so even if you saw it the day before you should take the time to see it again before hiking out.

The trailhead for the Arch is 3 1/2 miles from the Visitor's Center at Lee's Pass.

For the next 2 miles the trail parallels the creek (which provides welcome relief from the heat) and is completely flat, though the deep sand you will be walking in much of the time will slow your pace.
The walk to the arch was uninteresting and punctuated with the smell of horse dung.
The arch itself was nice, but not easy to see, since it is located high in a canyon wall upstream from the end of the trail (with no real way to get closer other than bushwacking and perhaps no better view for your effort).

The sign at the trail junction near the creek indicates that you've come 6.5 miles to this point and have another mile to go to the arch.
I wasn't particularly impressed with the arch the first time I visited it, but had some time to kill and decided to attempt this alternate route.
This hike is not recommended (unless you have a strong affinity for barn yard smells), the Lee Pass route to the arch is a better alternative.

Although I had been to Zion three previous times and had hiked both the Narrows (June 2000) and the Subway (November 1999), I had yet to try Angels Landing and Kolob Arch, my two objectives for this trip.
Starting at 3:15pm, I hiked the 7.6 miles to Kolob Arch and reached the Arch at 6:15pm.
My main concern for this particular hike was getting out of the mud flats by the time the sun went down since I was concerned about how difficult it would be to locate foot prints in the mud after dark.

Jedediah Smith, a trapper and trader, passed by the Kolob in 1826 accompanied by 16 men to explore the country and to find a way to California.
Lee Pass was named after John D. Lee, one of the original settlers who founded the town of Harmony, just west of the Kolob Canyons in the fall of 1852.

Compared to Valley of Fire, where we were earlier in the day, the Kolob is much less bizarre and dramatic.
The Kolob is actually a part of Zion National Park, but it enjoys its own, isolated atmosphere -- much different than the rest of the park.
This is a pretty trail that follows the creek, and at this time of year, the gold and amber leaves of quaking aspen scintillated in the evening sunlight.
