After their victory in the battle of Kolombangara on July 13 the Japanese had established a formidable garrison of 12,400 in Vila at the southern tip of the island.
The battle, coming less than one month after the night action at Kolombangara, was the first U.S. victory in a torpedo duel.

Vila is a site at the southern end of Kolombangara in the Solomon Islands, originally the location of the Vila Stanmore Coconut plantation.
During World War II, Japanese forces built an airstrip in order to stage aircraft from Rabaul down to Guadalcanal, and on several occasions, beginning on 24 January 1943 US attempted to put the airstrip out of operation by bombing it.
However, it remained in use until the Japanese evacuated Kolombangara in September and early October 1943.

During the recce visit to the Western Solomon Islands, this was by far the commonest large pigeon seen on both Gizo and Kolombangara with birds regularly seen flying overhead and periodically perched, especially in fruiting trees.
