Later on the same morning another small enemy cargo vessel was attacked by the same planes and left burning on a reef at the north tip of Baga Island.

The Battle of Blackett Strait was a naval battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on 6 March 1943 in the Blackett Strait, between Kolombangara Island and Arundel Island in the Solomon Islands.
After the American victory in the battle of Guadalcanal, operations in the Solomon Islands shifted to the west, where the Japanese maintained a substantial garrison on Kolombangara.
As they withdrew after landing their cargo, the two ships encountered the American Task Force 68 of three cruisers (Montpelier, Cleveland, and Denver) and three destroyers (Conway, Cony, and Waller) commanded by Rear Admiral Aaron S. Merrill, that had been bombarding Japanese positions at Vila.

The purpose of this operation was to reoccupy the remainder of the Solomons and the northern coast of New Guinea as far as Lae and Salamaua.
MacArthur's forces landed on islands off eastern New Guinea and on the New Guinea coast northwest of Buna where they were to make contact with an Australian division which was already fighting near Salamaua.
The strong Japanese position on Kolombangara was not assaulted directly, but was bypassed by the success on Arundel and with the 18 September 1943 landing of Army, Marine, and New Zealand troops on Vella Lavella, fifteen miles northwest of Kolombangara, between New Georgia and Bougainville.

They suggested a vegetable farm be established on the nearby island of Kolombangara to augment the drab dehydrated menu that was served to the wounded men in the base hospital.
Many people from Kolombangara she states, are closely related to the people of Rannogga and there is much intermarriage so she assumes that there could well be connections with the watermelon growing on the two islands.

Lat 8° 0' 0S Long 157° 4' 60E Located to the north of Arundel and Wana Wana Islands, just to the north-west of New Georgia.
For the defense of the New Georgia, the 'South-East Detachment' Headquarters were based on Kolombangara, headed by Major General Noboru Sasaki who arrived on May 31, 1943.
Bypassed by direct assault during the Central Solomons campaign, the island was neutralized by the 25th Infantry Division on September 25, 1943 and elements of the 27th Infantry landed on Island and established perimeter defense around Vila Airfield.

Although the closest settlement to Sagharughombe reef is a Gilbertese community on the island of Mbambanga, the villagers do not claim the fishing rights to the reef, however, they frequently fish it.
In the north, the reef is separated from Kennedy Island’s fringing reef by a channel, 35 meters deep.
Since logging on the nearby volcanic island of Kolombangara is conducted in an ecological friendly way, sedimentation from land runoff does not seem to be a big problem in this area.

She sailed from there on 5 February for the Solomon Islands and patrolled off Guadalcanal until the 13th when she joined Task Force (TF) 67 composed of four cruisers and their destroyer screen.
On 14 March, Strong, Nicholas (DD-449), Radford (DD 446), and Taylor (DD-468) were detached to bombard shore installations on Kolombangara Island and shelled targets on Vila Stanmore Plantation on 16 March.
Strong, with TF 18, accompanied three destroyer minelayers to Blackett Strait, between Kolombangara and Arundel Island, and mined it in the early morning hours of 7 May. The next morning, four Japanese destroyers sailed around Kolombangara into the strait and the minefield.
