Komotini (or Komotene Greek: Κομοτηνή, Turkish: Gümülcine, Bulgarian: Гюмюрджина (Gyumyurdjina)) is a city in north-eastern Greece.In the Byzantine Era, the city was known as Koumoutzina or Komotina and in the Ottoman Era, Komotini was known as Gumuldjina.
The population is extremely polyglot for a city of this size and it is made up of local Greeks, Greek refugees from Asia Minor, Turkish-speaking muslims, Pomaks, gypsies, descendants of Armenian refugees, and recent refugees from the countries of the former USSR (mainly Georgia, Armenia, Russia and Kazakhstan).
Komotini is the administrative seat of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, the Democritus University (third biggest in the country) and numerous governmental organisations.

The Jews of Komotini, who had always lived in harmony and had developed friendly ties with their fellow citizens, welcomed the liberation of the city by the Greek Army in 1919.

From 1977 all the place names in Komotini were changed from Turkish forms to Greek forms and henceforth it was forbidden to use the old names for official purposes, apparently on pain of fine or even imprisonment.
Additionally it is alleged that the authorities are attempting to disperse the minority by moving unemployed Turks and Pomaks to other areas, where once registered they are unable to return to Western Thrace, and are pressured under pain of dismissal to change their names to Greek ones.
The authorities have also prohibited the use of the adjective "Turkish" in titles denoting associations etc. and the Turkish Teachers Association in Western Thrace was closed by order of Komotini court on 20 March 1986, a decision upheld by the Athens High Court on 28 July 1987.

In 1984, the local Prefectures in Komotini and Xanthi applied to domestic courts demanding the banning of these Associations under the pretext that their names contained the adjective “Turkish”.
Subsequently Greek Courts ordered the dissolution of the “Western Thrace Turkish Teachers Union”, “Komotini Turkish Youth Union” and the “Turkish Union of Xanthi” on the grounds that their members declared that they were of “Turkish origin” and the titles of the Associations contained the word “Turkish”.

As far as I have heard, there is only one radio station in the island ¸ but did not anyone noticed me the name of the station and neither was audible on our residence.
As you can find the list below all these stations are coming from at least 25 km far (Kavala, but very few as the mountain stops nearly all the signals from there), but most stations can be heard from Xanthi, Komotini and Alexandroupoli ie all the places from eastern side of th islands.
Stations marked with TU are Turkish minority station s from Xanthi (abt 50 km far) or Komotini.
