Project 685 was tasked with developing an advanced submarine that could carry a mix of torpedoes and cruise missiles with conventional or nuclear warheads.

As a result of an onboard fire, Komsomolets sank on April 7, 1989, at a depth of 1700 meters in the Norwegian Sea, 180 miles to the south of Medvezhy Island.
The main purposes of these expeditions are the research of ecological situation on the wreck and in her vicinity, detailed study of the distortions of the body, and monitoring of the conditions inside of the bow part of the submarine, where two torpedoes with nuclear heads are located.
The Komsomolets wreck is located very close to the continent and lies in an area of Norwegian industrial fishing, which is one reason for concern regarding the future.

By tonnage and speed, the Komsomolets is within the range of the latest US attack submarines of the Los Angeles-class.[1] The Komsomolets was built and based near Murmansk and was designed, according to a Soviet Navy officer, to test technologies, materials, and operations at great depths.
In April 1989, the Soviet Navy indicated its intention to raise the Komsomolets.

The goal of this foundation is to get international financial support for its plans to either salvage the submarine totally, to salvage the torpedo part or to seal off the torpedo part of the submarine.
Radioactive components in the wreck which may be dissolved and spread in the water masses, include cesium-137 and strontium-90.

 ACP - Lubitel-2
The Komsomolets was manufactured from 1946 to 1951 in a quantity of 306.743 (according to LOMO; Princelle mentions a figure of 25.000 and Ryshkov of 28.000 -- more than a factor ten lower).
The model A is sometimes marked "Model A" on the viewfinder hood, and is distinguishable from the Model B by its mechanical frame counter, as opposed to the red window in the B model.
Gradually or not, in 1949 (according to factory data, although this would mean a two-year overlap with the Komsomolets, which I think is unlikely), the Lubitel saw the light.
