Kondo Isami (è¿‘è—¤ 勇 Kondō Isami, 1834 - 1868) Japanese official of the late Edo Period.
Kondo joined the unit, which became known as the Roshitai, and was followed by his close friend Hijikata Toshizo, as well as Shieikan's members and guests Yamanami Keisuke, Okita Souji, Harada Sanosuke, Nagakura Shinpachi, Todo Heisuke, and Inoue Genzaburo.
According to Tani Tateki (1837 - 1911) of the Tosa-Han, Kondo was properly executed by the new government (formed mostly by the samurai of the Choshu-Han and the Satsuma-Han) as a direct result of being accused of the murder of Sakamoto Ryoma.

Kondo (1834-1868) was a samurai from the Kanto region (now the area around Tokyo) who with his band of samurai travelled down the Tokaido (visiting Hozoji enroute) to the imperial capital of Kyoto.
Not long after the defeat of the Tokugawa supporters at the battle of Toba-Fushimi in January 1868, Kondo Isami was captured by and taken in custody to Kyoto where he was beheaded at Sanjogawa.
In fact until recently, even the direct descendants of Kondo Isami apparently did not know of the existence of the grave here and assumed the head to be buried in the Kondo graves at Tennei-ji on the slopes of Mount Atago in the Kanto area.

Kondo and two other men, Serizawa Kamo, Niimi Nishiki became joint leaders of the group, and Hijikata served as one of the deputy leaders.
After Kondo surrendered to the Imperial Loyalist Army and was executed in May 17 (lunar calendar April 25) 1868, Hijikata led Shinsengumi on their final battle against the new government, the Battle of Hakodate.
It is unknown where he was buried, but a memorial gravestone stands near Itabashi Station in Tokyo, next to Kondo Isami.

Though the details of his origin are unclear, he is thought to have originated from the Sendai domain.
When Kondo and other members of his dojo joined the Roshigumi, the military unit being sent to Kyoto by the Tokugawa Shogunate, Yamanami joined them.
In Kyoto, Kondo and his "faction" split from the Roshigumi, and formed the unit that would eventually become known as Shinsengumi.
