In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

Konfabulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Konfabulator is a freeware JavaScript runtime engine for Mac OS X and Windows which runs small applications called Widgets (note the uppercase "W" in Widget; this is the proper use of capitalization when referring to Konfabulator's applets), and hence is part of a class of software applications called widget engines.
Konfabulator was the first widget engine to provide a feature that could quickly bring all open Widgets to the top of the desktop.
In response to the demand for Konfabulator, and to provide a proper information source for Widget developers (some of which was scraping web sites for information for their Widgets), the Konfabulator development team decided to sell Konfabulator to Yahoo!.

Konfabulator: The Beginning Widget Writer's Guide
Konfabulator, by Arlo Rose and Perry Clarke, is a Mac OS X application comprising an XML parser, a JavaScript interpreter, and a runtime engine that can get your images composited onto the screen, call out to external AppleScripts or ``Command Line Interface'' tools, fetch data by URL, and interact with some select system interfaces.
Konfabulator will work with whatever format images you have, at least (from my tests) gif, jpeg, png, tiff, and pdf; though my understanding is that K won't draw animated image formats, e.g., animated gifs, mng, or Quicktime movies.
Konfabulator comes with a selection of widgets which perform a variety of tasks, any of which would be a good place to start – just remember that although the XML and JavaScript in these widgets is freely available for reuse, the art assets are not and they must not be redistributed.

JD on MX: Konfabulator vs Central
Konfabulator vs Central: Nitesh Dhanjani at O'Reilly considers the Apple Dashboard brouhaha, and asks what predated Konfabulator.
Konfabulator did announce six weeks before Central, but it's obvious that both had been underway for quite awhile before that, and that both take slightly different approaches to this "desktop persistence, network awareness" goal.
Konfabulator was not the first with this idea.

 Daring Fireball: Dashboard vs. Konfabulator
If you’re still willing to argue that Apple should have bought Konfabulator as the basis for Dashboard, you’re implicitly arguing that Apple should be more concerned about being nice to third-party developers than they are about the quality of the engineering undergirding their platform.
Konfabulator is not a lightweight or small-footprint environment — every Konfabulator widget runs as a separate process, with its own runtime environment in memory.
Konfabulator is a software platform; Rose and Perry decided upon a rather closed platform model: the only way even to run a Konfabulator widget is to purchase a license to the runtime.

XPThemes.com Forums: Thread "Konfabulator for Windows vs. DesktopX"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-10)
Konfabulator came out in 2003 on MacOS X. Its lead developer, Arlo Rose, had seen its last effort, Kaleidoscope evaporate as MacOS X did not support the APIs that Kaleidoscope required.
When Konfabulator announced it was going to come out with a Windows version back in November of 2003, it meant that eventually, the two would be able to be compared apples to apples (no pun intended).
Konfabulator has those a plenty (no matter what you say, or what you may pull out of wincustomize in 99.8% of the case the widgets for Konfabulator are better looking and more refined), makes them easy to use, and that is all it does...

 Daring Fireball: Konfabulous
Given that Arlo Rose was significantly responsible for Kaleidoscope, Konfabulator widgets are, unsurprisingly, heavy on the visual appeal.
Konfabulator is clearly geared to appeal to the Kaleidoscope crowd: tweakers who prefer to spend their time hacking pixels in Photoshop than hacking their actual source code.
The Konfabulator widget format is open and documented, but that doesn’t mean it’s a pleasure to write.

Russell Beattie Notebook » Great Artists Steal? Apple Developers Should Walk Out
I remember when I first read about Konfabulator about a year ago I was amazed at how cool the app was and how ingenious it was as well.
As others have pointed out, Konfabulator is pretty much a version of Desk Accessories (see Hertzfeld on the development of the IDEA starting in 1981 … http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintoshandstory=Desk_Ornaments.txtandtopic=Software%20DesignandsortOrder=Sort%20by%20Dateanddetail=medium).
The outrage over Apple "stealing" Konfabulator is entirely misplaced because if Apple stole Konfabulator, you might as well say Apple also stole browser technology or zeroconf (the technology behind Rendezvous) or PDF or a host of other basic technologies that Apple built upon and made better.
