Konkani is not a dialect of Marathi and it has been established that when the Konkani language had reached maturity, the Marathi language was in its developmental stages.

Raju Nayak, the president of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, has however wholeheartedly welcomed the court verdict stating that the issue of dual linguistic status has been set at rest and now is the time to implement the official language act and work for the development of Konkani language.
Konkani was then also recognised by the Sahitya Academy in 1975 as an independent language while the state-wide violent agitation forced the then Congress government to make it state official language in 1987.
While the language controversy had kept Goans fighting amongst themselves on the linguistic issue all these years since its liberation in 1961, Goan population has become double, from seven lakh to 15 lakh in spite of attaining best birth control rate, the prime reason being huge influx of outsiders in almost all the sectors.

Noted Konkani writer, Udai Bhembre, who presented his paper on ‘History of Konkani language’ yesterday said that the history of Konkani language is the history of a language which was being taken for crucifixion but fortunately was not killed.
Their dialect was influenced by Prakrit languages and that led to the birth of Konkani language in the 10th century.
The language research group in Anna University in Tamil Nadu is creating the Tamil -UNL system which will be presented at the conference by TCS and Media Lab Asia which are leading industries of this country which have groups devoted to building UNL based systems.
