Konstantin Petrovich Von Kaufman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufman (Константин Петрович фон-Кауфман in Russian) (1818 - 1882) was the first Governor-General of Russian Turkestan.
Von Kaufman entered the military engineering field in 1838, served in the campaigns in the Caucasus, was promoted to the rank of colonel, and commanded the sappers at the siege of Kars in 1855.
In its early years under Von Kaufman, Turkestan was thus also administratively isolated, with many distinctive institutions within the military bureaucracy, that was loosely superimposed on a largely unreformed native administration.

The Tsar liberally rewarded Chernyayev and his men with medals and bonuses, but regarded the impulsive general as a “loose cannon”, and soon replaced him with General Konstantin Petrovich Von Kaufman.

 Who are the Assyrians
Those of the Assyrian army that were able to flee Nineveh escaped hundreds of miles westward to Harran, where Ashur-Uballit II of the Assyrian royal family was proclaimed king of Assyria.
Konstantin Petrovich Matveev in his book The Assyrians and the Assyrian Question[40] writes that, “It has been documented that Meneshe, an Assyrian prince, was able to escape towards the north during the fall of Nineveh and fortify in the mountains of Ashur.” (Translated from Arabic by Fred Aprim[41]).
A report by Reuters from 1987, states that, “The new evidence shows that rather than dispersing, surviving Assyrians formed small societies some distance away from their main cities.”[42] The new evidence refers to Assyrian Tells (mounds) in Iraq dating to the third century BC, three centuries after the fall of their empire.

The first Russian military governor, Konstantin Petrovich Von Kaufman, commissioned an encyclopedic photographic survey of the area's peoples, customs, culture, buildings, and monuments, designed to acquaint Westerners with the region, and possibly to serve as an orientation tool for new officials and the home office.
The photographs from the survey were assembled in the four-volume Turkestanskii Al'bom, of which the Library's copy is one of only seven known sets.
