The best explanation I've heard for how Kopi Luwak originated was that people thought gathering the coffee beans from the tall trees was too much work, so out of laziness (!) they gathered the beans from the luwak poop.
He told them to then pretend to give him the silk bags of luwak poop as if were a special offering to royalty in a way that the top Dutch officer would think he saw something that was being kept from him.
The villagers could keep their ordinary old coffee but all the kopi luwak would be turned over to the VOC.
