 Build a KORA
The kora is from west African & is a 21 stringed instrument in the harp family whose neck & body vaguely resembles a big banjo.
I was going to call this a "kora-like" instrument, but it plays and sounds so much like the African-built instrument that it IS a kora, even if the construction materials and methods might be different.
Try to make the holes through the tin side to be just a bit under-sized, so that when the rods are forced through to the other side, they will be held tight.

 kora --  Encyclopædia Britannica
The peoples of the Senegambia have not produced any significant art, though there were blacksmiths in all societies and a few drum and kora (a complex stringed instrument) makers.
The sophisticated kora of the Malinke people of West Africa is classified as a harp lute.
Its strings lie in two parallel ranks, rising on either side of a vertical bridge, which has a notch for each string.

 Kora
The Kora is made from a half a gourd calabash with a hardwood post that runs through it to which the strings are attached.
The Kora player supports the instrument with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers and the notes are played with the thumbs and forefingers of both hands.
Since each Kora song relies strongly on the vocal line it is easy to discern a piece when it is played instrumentally.

Typically, a somewhat lean, dry sound is advantageous in resolving the complex waveforms of this percussive musical instrument, so one might expect the EAD to better the warmer Kora with piano music.
The Kora was such a spectacular performer that we had it pegged within the first few minutes, and our views remained unchanged during its tenure.
Wonderfully dynamic, the Kora was fantastically exciting in the full orchestra sections, but the waltzes should ooze with sweetness, and I missed just a bit of this.

 Scales and Tunings
This is the assignment of the 21 Kora strings to the keyboard.
African Kora Fola (Kora players) normally are not concerned with absolute pitches, this question arises only when they play together with keyboards or other Western tuned instruments.
However, younger Kora Fola tend to play in bands together with Western instruments where they need to tune to them.

Instruments such as the guitar and kora are plucked, either by a finger or thumb, or by some other device such as a plectrum.
Other string instruments with a keyboard include the clavichord (where the strings are struck by tangents), and the harpsichord (where the strings are plucked by tiny plectra).
Some string instruments have keyboards attached which are manipulated by the player, meaning she does not have to pay attention to the strings directly.

Instruments such as the guitar and kora are plucked, either by a finger or thumb, or by some other device such as a plectrum.
By far the most well-known instrument to use this method is the piano, where the hammers are controlled by a mechanical action; another example is the hammered dulcimer, where the player herself wields the hammers.

There are two common ways of bringing this about: instruments such as the guitar and kora are plucked, either by a finger or thumb, or by some other device such as a plectrum; while instruments like the cello and rebec are usually played by drawing a bow across the strings.
Instruments which are normally bowed such as the violin, etc, must be bowed perpendicularly to the string, usually at a point half way between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge.
Other string instruments with a keyboard include the clavichord (where the strings are struck by tangents), and the harpsichord (where the strings are plucked by quills).

Rykodisc Catalog - New Ancient Strings (Nouvelles Cordes Anciennes) - Toumani Diabate
Inspired by the legendary recording Cordes Anciennes (Ancient Strings) by the great kora masters, Sidiki Diabate (Toumani's father) and Djelimadi Sissoko (Ballake's father) New Ancient Strings is unlike any other album of African music: no added effects, instruments or vocals, just flowing, virtuoso kora at its finest, and most lyrical.
In 1987 (then just 21 years old), Toumani broke into the international concert scene with his highly acclaimed album Kaira (HNCD 1323), still the best-selling kora album, and one of the few that features the instrument on its own, without voices or other instruments.
Toumani Diabate is undoubtedly the most brilliant and best known exponent of the kora from Mali.

Xalam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It most often acts as a solo or duo instrument to accompany praise songs and historical recitations, and in some areas it may form part of a larger group including kora, drums, and calebashes.
The strings of the xalam are typically made of two or three tighly wound strands of low-gauge nylon fishing line; these strings are fixed to the instrument's wooden neck by long and narrow leather strips and to its wooden bridge by cotton strings.
The xalam is thought to have originated from modern-day Mali, but some believe that, in antiquity, the instrument may have originated from ancient Egypt.
