 Desertification Monitoring: Is the Desert Encroaching?
A stratification of a transect through N. Kordofan was carried out based on Landsat false colour composites (FCC) (188/49, 51, 52) and one MSS 5 image (188/50) recorded Nov. 9, 1972 and compared with a corresponding stratification based on Landsat imagery (MSS 5 and RBV imagery) recorded Jan. 25, 1979 (Fig.1).
A 6,000 sq km area located in the centre of an old core area of cultivation was mapped to the scale of 1:500.000 through interpretation of the Landsat 1972 and 1979 imagery and compared to a map of cultivated fields based on interpretation of air photos (approximate scale 1:48,000) recorded in 1962.
It was demonstrated by Ref. 25 that 85% of the variation in millet crop yields in Northern Kordofan could be explained by rainfall parameters during the 1952-1980 period.

It is situated about 2000 ft. above the sea, at the northern foot of Jebel Kordofan, in 13 II N. and 30 14 E. It is an important trade centre, the chief articles of commerce being gum, ivory, cattle and ostrich feathers.
In September 1882 the town was assaulted by the troops of the mahdi, who, being repulsed, laid siege to the place, which capitulated on the j7th of January 1883.
During the i\Iahdia the city was destroyed and deserted, and when Kordofan passed, in 1899, into the possession of the Anglo-Egyptian authorities nothing was left of El Obeid but a part of the old government offices.

Abstract: The region of North Kordofan was taken as a case study representing the vulnerable Sahelian zone in the Sudan.
Meteorological data obtained from the Sudan Meteorological Department were examined in order to identify the general trends in the annual rainfall pattern in Northern Kordofan during the last two decades for the purpose of defining the relationship between the observed patterns among other factors and the biomass.
Diversity of plant species in arid and semi-arid lands was under siege from the combined pressure of recent drought, hence the northerly habitats of Kordofan experienced a serious decline in range desirable species and the prevalence of drought resistant rejected forms.

The loan agreement was signed by Lennart Bage, president of IFAD, and Magzoub El Khalifa, the Sudanese federal minister of agriculture, at IFAD headquarters in Rome.
With a poverty rate of 50-70 percent, Kordofan, which borders the war-torn region of Darfur, is one of the poorest parts of Sudan.
