  Korea Defense Service Medal
The Korea Defense Service Medal was established by Section 543 of the 2003 National Defense Authorization Act (PL 107-314) signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 2, 2002.
The Korea Defense Service Medal was designed by John Sproston of the Army's Institute of Heraldry.
At the bottom of the medal, and following its lower contour, are a spray of laurel on the left and a spray of bamboo on the right, joined at the center.

The Korea Defense Service Medal (KDSM) is authorized for those members of the U.S. military who have served duty in the Republic of Korea to uphold the armistice between South and North Korea.
The Korea Defense Service Medal is retroactive to the end of the Korean War and is granted to any service performed after July 28, 1954.
The National Personnel Records Center is responsible for verifying entitlement of the KDSM to discharged members of the military who served in Korea prior to the creation of the KDSM.

The Korea Defense Service Medal will be awarded to those assigned, attached or mobilized to units operating or serving on all the land area of South Korea, and the continuous waters to 12 nautical miles from shore and all airspace above those areas.
This medal is not to be confused with the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
The medal will be issued to Air Force active-duty, Reserve and Guard people by their servicing military personnel flights beginning in the fall.

As a result, in June of 1976 the Secretary of Defense disaproved the recommendation to accept the Republic of Korea Service Medal "because normal military duty in Korea under present circumstances does not warrant reception of such a medal." Acceptance of the medal by either individuals or groups was therefore prohibited.
It is not known how many of these medals were awarded, but when the recipients attempted to have them posted to their military records the medals were impounded and no record of the award was entered into the service records.
As a result of effecting lobbying by the Korea Defense Veterans Association, in 2003 Congress created the Korea Defense Service Medal to recognize service in Korea on or after July 28, 1954, the date the Korean War Ended.
