The air combat commands, consisting of different mixes of fighters, bombers, transports, helicopters, reconnaissance aircraft, and surface-to- air missile (SAM) regiments, were created by integrating and reorganizing existing air divisions during the mid- to late 1980s.
The Third Air Combat Command, headquartered at Hwangju in the south, is responsible for the border with South Korea and the southernmost areas along the east and west coasts.

Planning Air Operations   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Enthusiasm for air power and the desire to show that air power was enough to win a war were not enough to make up for deficiencies in planning, command structure, or resources that plagued this operation.
Air Force leaders were looking for a strong name for the operation and wanted to avoid using the term interdiction in favor of terms that clearly indicated that this was an air campaign.
Air planners and air commanders had simply assumed through their beliefs in air power that they could interdict the enemy supply levels to the point where the enemy would be forced to negotiate a settlement rapidly and in good faith.

The Future of US Airpower on the Korean Peninsula   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Additionally, North Korean pilots are lucky to get 20 hours a year of flight time (probably because of the same lack of fuel that bedevils mechanized, armored, and self-propelled artillery forces), a situation that further diminishes the readiness of their less-than-modern air force.
Clearly, US and South Korean airpower serves as a strong deterrent against the traditional aggression that North Korea wanted to initiate prior to the economic collapse that put its formidable armored and mechanized forces into a state of decline.
Clearly, US Air Force aircraft would figure prominently in the suppression and destruction of North Korean airfields, from which platforms (most of them AN-2s) carrying SOF troops would deploy, and in support of the South Korean air force’s aerial interception of enemy transport aircraft conducting paradrop missions into the South.

 DPRK the Soviet View
The South Korean air force numbered a total of 1,899 soldiers and officers as of 2 June 1950; of this number, less than 100 were pilots, and since all their aircraft "died" in the first days of the war, they either fled or were captured by the North Koreans.
In all cases, the North Koreans assert that their attacks on aircraft, helicopters and ships were substantiated due to violations of North Korean air and sea space on spying missions, but the South Koreans and Americans flatly deny this.
As is correct, the North Korean air forces put their aircraft in their own color schemes, which were used for all aircraft and helicopters prepared for use in that country, and which were delineated by their own national insignia and side numbers.
