In Hapkido, when most teachers speak of Korean sword they are usually speaking to the use of the Ye-Do and often with a heavy emphasis on Japanese tradtions and influences rather than the indigenous Korean traditions or their more Chinese influences.
Kal is a straight single edged sword and it was single edged because if you wanted to kill somone they would cut with the blade side but it if they wanted the person alive they wit with the backside.
Koreans made swords popular because they were vassals under the chinese when they fought with chinese korean hardly used short chinese swords.

Instead of the warrior adapting to the sword, in Korea, the sword was adopted to the warrior.
In the European case, at least, I think the generalization of "sword" to include sabers was due largely to the fact that the saber assumed both the functional and symbolic roles of straight swords in military and ceremonial use.

After looking at the Chinese swords in the Chinese forum, I thought it would be nice to take a ganders at traditional Korean swords.
I'm guessing the designs for Korean swords were introduced from Korea to Japan when Paekche influence on Japanese culture was at its peak with Korean craftsmen going over there to teach flsmiths in Osaka and then their knowledge spreading from there on in Japan.
The Chinese often exported their swords to Japan and Korea in the past and transferred skills to them such as obtaining patterns from differential heat-treatment.

Korean swords and Japanese are quite similar but different in a number of ways...for example korean swords do not have grooves...and also they can be two-sided, as opposed to the katana which are always one-sided.
I doubt westerners really know about him but in my opinion, as a non-Korean, this guy is greater than any Admirals of history equal to Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins and second only to Admiral Zheng He IMO.
During the Meji Restoration and up to WW2, he was deified as a god to the Imperial Japanese Navy.
