During the construction of a new section of track for the highspeed rail link between Athens and Thessaloniki, a small fortification (quadriburgium) was discovered 10 km north-east of Katerini and 3 km north of the village of Korinos.
Rescue excavations, carried out by The Ninth Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities in Thessaloniki and under the direction of Mrs E. Marki, uncovered within the defences a Christian basilica and a house ('megaron') as well as ancillary structures.
Two of these burial mounds are on high ground, either side of the modern highway, 2.5 km south-west of Louloudies and north-west of Korinos.

A popular tourist destination, Katerini is very close to the sea (6 km.), to several archaeological sites of great interest like the ancient city of Dion (5th century BC, 17 km.
