If Nahoko Takato, Noriaki Imai and Soichiro Koriyama were citizens of another democracy, they would probably have become heroes for risking their lives to help people in misery and despair in a war-ravaged country thousands of kilometers away.
Imai and Koriyama have since recovered and begun giving their own accounts of the kidnapping but Takato is still shut away in her family home in Hokkaido, her spirits crushed.
Upon returning home, Koriyama read all his mail, including a hate mail that said, “I want to knife you to death.” The deranged ones aside, he was surprised to find that critical messages came mostly from those in their 60s.
